The existence of music streaming platforms makes finding music easier than ever. However, millions of songs and hundreds of genres circulate, making it harder to discover niche music. Users have also adopted an elusiveness where they strive to adopt the most unique music taste—creating a “gatekeeping” culture surrounding music.
Synopsis
“I Love Bees” was an Alternate Reality Game (ARG) created for the release of Bungie’s 2004 game Halo 2. When initial trailers of the game released in 2002 fans were surprised to see a glitch in the trailer that revealed a link to a website: Ilovebees.com. Thus led a coding based scavenger hunt for information on the release.
Case Study
The chase, the “hunt” caused more of a stir than the game itself. This sense of exclusiveness can easily be translated to the music industry.
How can a magazine be a tool to explore niche music genres while ironically expressing the elusiveness of modern music culture?
